Athena Atkinson is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in Florida and currently works at Ob/Gyn Specialists of the Palm Beaches, Inc. in Wellington and Perinatal and Gynecologic Specialists of the Palm Beaches, Inc. in West Palm Beach.

Atkinson has been in the OB/Gyn field for 36 years and has been a Midwife for 27 of those years. Her career began in New York, where she completed her Bachelor of Science-Nursing Degree at Syracuse University in 1973. About 10 years later she returned to school to achieve her certification in Nurse Midwifery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Determined to further her education, she attended San Diego State University and received her Master's of Science-Public Health in 1988.

Atkinson believes this profession is a way to empower women. "Allowing women to make their own choices in planning their families could spill over and effect how they make life choices."

Mrs. Atkinson's specialization lies in her attitude and charisma towards her patient. "My humor, down-to-earth nature, gentle hands and patience [all aid in the process] in achieving a wonderful birth."

Her means of working with women seems to help her clientele relax and be comfortable during and leading up to the birth.

Athena Atkinson has been married for 11 years and has a 25-year-old stepson. She is a strong supporter of the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Sickle Cell Foundation. In her spare time, she enjoys playing tennis and traveling.
